With mine (86 Westy) as soon as i turn the key and without giving it any gas it fires right up but if i dont immediatley run it upto 2000 rpm or so it dies and can only be restarted by putting the pedal to the floor. I used to think it was bad it run a cold engine fast and would try to keep it under 2000 rpms or so but then the theif (mechanic) that changed my head gaskets told me if it does'nt start right up and keep running to put the pedal to the floor and run it really fast (4000 rpm) as soon as it starts up.

Good luck,

Andrew Fox 86 Westy, toying with the name "The Log", because my van is such POS.
