I've got an 83 Air Cooled and I installed a sheet metal deflector on each side vent. Overall it seemed to provide cooler engine temps and didn't whistle or show signs of being anything other than a stock looking part. I'm sure I was getting decent ram air effect because it popped my license plate out from the spring detent on the lock devise. Everything was Rock and Roll until I hit a horrendous thunderstorm about three weeks into evaluating my newly invented gizmo. Definition: Horrendous = hordes of people pulled off the Interstate because the rain was so fierce that you couldn't see. The over abundance of ram air commingled with buckets of rain water wet down my alternator and ruined it. I did not see improved performance, better power at any range or any direct results other than slight engine temperature reductions. Then only + or - 5 degrees (f). A ram air devise that had some flow control might be a better solution but after reading the archives I haven't found anybody that raves about any success in this area. Something going directly in through the air cleaner might be a possibility but additional dirt and moisture prohibit me from having any special interest in researching any farther.
