Use a multi-meter to test output at the sender.  One pole is simply
open/close, the other a variable resistance.  You can also verify the
ground from sender to the block.
Gee, I was thinking of upgrading my JCWhitney gauge to VDO, maybe not....

Ken, I thought of that.  First tried removing the wire at the
sender, then from the gauge.  Same difference--gauge needle
stays rock solid at "0".
