Subject: Westy Roof Racks - carrying kayaks
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252"

Here in Vancouver, BC a lot of Westy owners seem to be using the Thule or Yakima artificial rain gutter brackets (http://www.thuleracks.com/thule/product.asp?sku=542&dept_id=16) bolted to their camper tops and standard crossbars from either company to carry kayaks, canoes, sailboards etc. One guy told me he stands on the bars regularly without any signs of stress appearing in the fibreglass.

Although this looks like the most practical solution, I’m having a hard time committing to the idea of drilling holes in my camper top. Any comments/encouragement from those of you who have done this would be appreciated; arguments against also appreciated.
