Subject: D-Westy+broken motor

I believe that the motor in my Westy is broken. I had replaced the timing belt and belt tensioner. The bolt holding the belt cog to the cam was torqued to the Bentley spec. three days ago. Drove down the road last night and the cam cog came loose. My bet is that the valves and the pistons met. Lesson to be learned, retorque the cam bolts after heating up the motor. My friend explained to me that if someone in the history of the van over-tightened that bolt then the Bentley value will be too low. The end of the cam is tapered.

So now I am trying to decide what to do. The van is in great shape, but I have another one also. I could put in a new stock motor, sell it to someone who is looking for a D-Westy that needs a motor, or put in a TD and AC trany. Not needing a smog test is very handy.

Anyway, for the TD motor, the Overland site offers a kit for their motor. Other companies offer just the TD motor. If someone that has replaced the stock motor with a TD, I would appreciate your opinions on companies offer motors, kits, and what needs to be modified.

Thanks

Scot
