With a DZ tranny, I have to agree. There were 2 different ring and pinion gearing ratios used in the 4 speed diesel Vanagons sold in the US. If you have the more common 5.86 ratio DZ the stock diesel engine won't do much over true 60 mph without screaming for mercy. If you have the less common 5.43 ratio DM that at least came in some passenger models you get about 5 mph more.

Don't bother telling me that yours does 70 no sweat. Vanagon speedos like most others are generally optimistic. Put some 185/70/14 tires up front and you can have the illusion of 75 mph but most semis will still be passing you.
