You could go the VW TDi or TD route. Or look at an alternative diesel engine, but realize that you'd have to have a flywheel & adaptor plate custom-fabricated.

Toyota's 2.2 turbo 3C-T would be really ideal, as it's an inline flat-four, and would fit well. They certainly go. The engine is common in the Japanese-market Estima (=Previa). You'd want to bump up the gearing hugely too (custom gears necessary eg Albins).
