I ordered a special axle nut remover tool, I believe 46 mm, that fits over the axle nut and has a place for a breaker bar. You put it over the nut, engage the breaker bar, put a massive load on it and bang the tool with a hammer. It costs about 8 bucks. Go by a local VW shop. They probably have one, or call 1-888-VW-PARTS to order one. I use Johnson Foreign Parts for my miscelaneous VW part needs. They are located in Decatur, AL, they're reliable and they drive Vanagons, too.
