My Friday dream: a 2002 model South African 2.6i 5-cylinder Caravelle with these modifications: 1. stripped of its interior rear seats etc and replaced with RHD Westfalia furniture, roof and pop-top installed, 2. syncro suspension etc, 3. front of gearbox modified for front wheel drive power take-off and prop shaft, 4. connected to an engageable non-viscous front locking diff, 5. 16" wheels, 6. 5-cylinder motor replaced by a CJ or CU series 2.0litre air-cooled motor with twin carbs for reliability and strength but without silly unreliable things like radiators and coolant. This vehicle would have a modern new body with the big South African windows, a lovely Westfalia camping fit-out, the enlarged 5-cylinder motor engine bay would have the room to house the 2.0litre air-cooled motor, a strong South African gearbox, a simple part-time 4WD drive system with two locking diffs, and the big 16" rims to which can be fitted Michelin Xs sand tyres. I would then be set to tour the Sahara Desert once more in confidence. I just need some understanding Rupert Murdoch or Bill Gates to finance this dream. Simon Glen Toowoomba, Australia. |
