Our '72-74 exhaust system (which also fits aircooled Vanagons, except for California emissions models) is NOT noticably louder than the stock aircooled Vanagon system. In fact, it IS the stock setup on aircooled Vanagons pretty much everywhere in the world besides the U.S. (We in the U.S. got a much more complicated/expensive exhaust system instead, to satisfy the U.S. requirement for a cat converter.) However, since it will not accept a catalytic converter (or EGR filter), and all U.S. Vanagons are supposed to have a cat, it is "legal for sale in the U.S. for vehicles which will not be used on public roads." Of course enforcement of these regulations varies greatly by region (or around here, even from one garage to the next!). We sell both a stainless steel and a mild steel version of this non-catalyst system. (In the former case, it is the muffler body that is stainless, not the tailpipe, flanges, or hardware.) Since the price difference is only about $20, the stainless is definately the way to go. Our part number 071 251 053EKS, $189.95. As has been noted, we also sell the correct U.S. spec exhaust system for the Vanagon, which accepts a cat converter. This is $285, part number 071 251 053CK. That price excludes the cat itself, which is $95 additional. It will not fit California emissions vans, but we can substitute a couple of parts to create one that will, for the same price.
