Very interesting findings with more critical investigation.
#1. One lifter was about to dissemble, the spring clip hanging in by one
side. (had new lifter in spare parts)
#2. One main bearing dowel pin missing on #3 main, bearing hadn't spun
but showed signs of moving in the case. (Freebie form local VW shop)
#3. Cylinders still had hash marks but I honed them to accommodate a
looser fit and new ring set. (Hopefully I simulated about 10,000 miles of
break in.)
Everything went back together with a new ring set without any problems.
I'm going to couple up a spare tranny to it tomorrow and build oil
pressure.
Engine previously has 24-28 psi at temp idling, 65-70 psi at temp 3400
rpms under load.
