To answer the question, drain it into a container. The following is plagiarized from the Prestone website: "Dispose of the used antifreeze/coolant according to local laws and regulations. Be sure to label the disposed container clearly as used antifreeze. Some accidents happen because the container was mistaken for something else. So don't use containers from beverages to store used antifreeze. Keep the container stored securely away from children and animals until you can dispose of or recycle the used coolant safely. " Here in NJ we can take it to our county recycle centres, as long as it is not mixed with oil, and turn it in for recycling. There is a limit, I forget what it is, but if you show them documentation of your cooling system capacity (IE owner's manual or Bentley), they will allow you to dispose up to that amount. At least here in Ocean County, NJ they do. Believe it or not, some localities (none here in NJ however) allow it to be dumped in sanitary (not storm) drains. I am not comfortable with this, but they say it is biodegradable, especially if you have a septic system. The governments say it is okay so..... ....but then again, they also believed at one time that plutonium could be kept in steel barrels underground. Hmmmm Tim Crooks 90 Vanagon GL Barnegat, NJ |
