Here in town, I'd walk over to 'Clark's Auto Supply' first, then the
local NAPA. Both seem to be able to get their hands on anything. It
isn't like Rotella is rare.
For what it is worth, I've never used special "diesel" oil in our 1985
Jetta TD (unless it was what was on special when I changed my oil).
Castrol, Texaco, Shell, whatever 20w50 that was cheapest (10w40 in the
coldest winters). As long as it met the SJ rating, which almost all oils
do. Fram and Purolator filters too. Every 3000k.
We're at 250k miles, and going strong without any engine work at all. I
think the fuss about oil is misplaced. IMHO it's more important to
change it regularly than to drive around looking for a "special" oil.

Matthew, Matthew.....I hear what you are saying loud and clear, I hate
the
Big Box retailers too, because of all of the reasons you listed and then
some. BUT, I did mention that I would RATHER buy the oil elsewhere if at
all
possible, but where? I'd gladly pay more and not shop at Mall Wart for
my
engine oil. There are no 'community consequences, no other place in
sight
has the stuff. Did Shell plan only to market this oil through Mall Wart?
Thing is, ya see, when one needs said product and no other place carries
it,
what does one do? Use lesser oils that kill his engines? Ideas?
