Your 86 should have 3 fan speeds for the radiator cooling fan. The temp switch in the radiator controls speeds 1 and 3. The A/C system controls speed 2. There is a large resistor that is used to slow down the fan for speeds 1 and 2. This is the likely culprit if the fan runs at only the highest speed when you hot wire the fan switch. The highest speed does NOT use the resistor. The resistor is a very common part to fail and it comes up on the list as a problem constantly. The resistor lives behind the driver's side headlight (LHD). It is clipped into a metal bracket and has 3 wire connections. A drawing is on page 87.5 of the latest Bentley. I unplugged the thermal switch I THINK. I hot wired it and it DOES run. But it won't come on by itself! I don't know what to do??? What should I check? I also checked with a multi-meter, and there is power to one of the three wires all the time, the other has power when I kick the AC on. And the third goes to the fan. SO, I'm stumped! I'd really appreciate some advice! I'm getting REALLY frustrated:-( Thank you so much! > > Barry > > Madison, WI |
