I decided the price of the VW muffler was a little much for me to stomach last summer...

I ended up at a pretty good muffler shop that suggested an alternative to the stock arrangement. (I had a 1987 2.1 Westy) I ended up needing the header pipes and ordered them from Bus Depot. But, the only other part needed was a muffler. The shop used a standard '5" Dodge Can' and welded the exhaust flange from the old muffler onto it. The Dodge can is a little shorter than the stock VW can, so an extra long tailpipe was welded on to make the tailpipe look stock.

The muffler just clamped into one of the muffler clamps since it was a little short. But, overall it worked quite well, sounded, and ran just the same. Well, a little better since the exhaust leak was gone. I think the total cost of the muffler, welding, and installation was about $100.

Hi Volks:

I wonder if any of you have experience using a generic muffler in place of the stock.

I'd think that the inlet and outlet sizes need to be the same as stock, and the body of the muffler should be about the same shape/dimension as the stock.

Suppose the above parameters were met in a generic muffler - could it be used?
