I would recommend putting the engine cover on and closing the rear hatch before trying to take vent temperatures. When the A/C has to pull hot engine air all the time, the vent temperatures won't get very low.

My A/C guy looks for the system to maintain 200 psi on the high side before he changes the freon level. Typically, the ambient temp here in Florida is 90F+ when he gets to work on it. He also used one of those electronic spot thermometers to measure the temperature in and out of the evaporator and was satisfied with 35F into the evap.

Keep an ear open for the 2nd stage of the cooling fan, when high side pressure gets above 210psi, it will kick on. For me, that is most sunny afternoons until the cabin cools off some.

Good luck,

Thanks for all the advice on ressurrecting the AC on my Volksy. The retro-fit went well. I don't have a manifold set, but took it to a mechanic/friend who did, and got it pumped down... I recharged it myself, and had the amounts measured out... Unfortunatly due to a faulty can of R-134, I'm not sure how much of that one went in... What I'm wondering is what sort of pressures to expect when I hook it up to the guages? It seems to be cooling pretty well although I've yet to try it in 90 degree heat. Also, what vent temps should I expect? I'd appreciate any thoughts and pointers you can give! Thanks again!
