Subject: Re: Aircooled vanagon acceptable oil temperature / timing problem?

I don't trust my gauges anymore. The cyinder head temperature was only sitting around 200F, while the oil temperature was 250F-275F. To be safe I just shut her down and had a rest, I was not in a $2,500 hurry.

The thing I like about the Maxi-Cool oil coolers is that they have a built in fan: http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=231 http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=232

What do I need 1/2" or 5/8"?

I am not as mechanically inclined as I would like. What is involved in setting my timing?

Thanks, Chris

I highly recomend the oil cooler set up from the bus boys to all my customers when they purchase an air cooled type 2/4 engine from me. Oil does not like to acept more heat above 225 F range so when you see higher oil temps the head and piston temps are whats driving the increase. my guess would be that you had head temps in the 450 F range to make the oil that hot and that you where going fast in the heat of the day > >Bob Donalds > >http://www.bostonengine.com
