I have both front and rear sway bars on my syncro.

In order to determine whether the sway bar disconnects would be a good
addition, I measured axle articulation and wheel drop for the vehicle
with the sway bar disconnected at the rear and then connected again.

According to the results I obtained on that hot sweaty day, I could see
no difference in the ability of the rear wheel to droop whether the sway
bar was connected or not. Accordingly, I put sway bar disconnects into
the background of projects pending further information.

I did not test the front sway bar to see if the results would be the
same.

However, it seemed possible that the syncro simply does not have
sufficient axle articulation and wheel drop to make a sway bar disconnect
meaningful as it is in the world of other 4x4s.

It would be interesting to see if/when John Wessels performs the same
test on his van to find out the results there, as it would seem
theoretically that his vehicle configuration might have more use for
disconnecting the sway bars.

But sometimes you have to actually test these things to find out what the
actual benefit is.

Aside from its role as a sway bar, I particularly liked my rear sway
bar's additional role as a quasi-skid plate in the back.
SYNCRO OWNERS WHO DRIVE OFF THE ROAD:
You only get to change your ring and pinions once every 10 years
because that's how long the average syncro transmission goes before
its next rebuild. If you want bigger tires and more ground clearance
start planning your higher number ring and pinion sets right now so you
can take advantage of your next trans rebuild.
