Day 1 was essentially a short shakedown cruise from San Diego to Riverside (a little over 2 hours at highway speeds.) Day 2 (a couple of days later actually) was from Riverside to Gallup, NM. Cruise control is so nice to have...despite a Vanagon being unable to maintain 65mph on some grades :) The deserts (Mojave and western Arizona) were hot (110+ degrees). The fridge only kept things slightly cool (75-80). However, I put a bag of ice into the water container and we had COLD water for drinking. I put a small amount of ice into the fridge...and collected the water with paper towels, which we used to towel (wet) ourselves with for a VERY refreshing break from the heat while driving. Later we encountered rain showers in eastern Arizona...and a very heavy rainstorm as we crossed over into New Mexico. The purple (camper) brick is getting about 18.5 mpg. Which is about what I expect from a Syncro. Tomorrow we head towards Telluride, Ridgway and Montrose Colorado (southwest Colorado). The day after? Monarch Pass on Route 50 (11,300 feet) and then on to Kansas. |
