Sound a bit weird to me. In fact sounds like a spoof. Ever heard of aircraft using LOWER octanne fuel, quite the opposite? For a given normally aspirated engine, the peak compression pressures will be a bit low, granted, but this is not the only reason for detonation, it being (like most things engineering) a very complicated business, indeed - read anything Ricardo related - a giant among motor engineers. And what if you drive into Colorado in a turbo or supercharged car? If a manufacturer states 95, 93, 91 minimum octane rating, that's generally what they mean.
