I carefully drilled and tapped a hole on the thermostat housing for the VDO temp sensor, and it has to be grounded in order to work. My van is a 1990, and the thermostat housing is new. I did this to my wife's Jetta many moons ago, snd the plastic hasn't cracked at all. Both vehicles have the stock gauge dissabled. By the way, I still need to find that gauge cluster housing and printed foil.
