I have the same set up on my 83.5 Watercooled Westy. I installed the slightly larger hose (then end is slightly larger) about 2 years ago. The connection does weep sligthly. I'd replace it with the correct hose but they are so @#%**@# expensive. And as you said I'm pretty sure the hose of which you speak is from the later bus with the larger coolant pipes.
