First make sure that the circlip is removed. I know, but check anyway.
Take a heavy hammer or mallet (1 ½ lb or more); slide the CV rubber boot well
back from the CV joint; hold the shaft with the CV joint hanging down over a
soft clean surface (I used a plastic pail); now swiftly slide the hammer along
the shaft and hit the CV's metal ring that is stuck on the shaft; rotate the
shaft 120° and hit it again; keep this up and the CV joint will suddenly fall
free.
You will have to use a good solid blow that can be scary. I was nervous too when
I was first shown this method. I was afraid that the CV joint would be damaged
and I'd need to replace it. I needn't have worried; not a mark on the CV or
shaft. Still I would have liked to have used a brass mallet :-)
