Got back from Nova Scotia yesterday and had a great time. A really beatiful place to visit and very Westy-friendly. Didn't see as many as I thought I would but saw enough (in addition to a bunch of whales). I already miss the cool weather as I try to get used to this miserable 95 degree heat/humidity here in DC. What I'm really happy about, however, is how well the Westy ran. 2,906 miles and no mechanical problems - zero, none, not even close. Used half a quart of oil but that's mostly due to the drip from the poorly fitting oil plug. The worst thing that happened was that my brother-in-law backed his car into my sliding door on a stopover on the way up. While a bit depressing, I didn't let it ruin the trip. Was somewhat self conscious about it, however, since I had the van painted last year so I had to explain to all the other Westy owners what happened. Anyway, I think it's important for people to report on these successful problem-free trips so that we get more of a balanced view of the Vanagon's reliability. This was my first really long trip in the Westy and I must say after being on the list for a year that I had my trepidations. But she's proven herself now and I would drive her anywhere. If anyone wants info on Nova Scotia, don't hesitate to contact me. The parks there are relatively empty and beautiful. We even camped on top of a 7-story parking lot in downtown Halifax. Beautiful view of the harbor and walking distance to the museums. Next year, it's off to Newfoundland. Gerry Royston '87 Westy |
