So, I put two new heads on the 89 (110,000 miles) and put new rings on the pistons... Now it uses 1 quart of oil every 150 miles... obviously not an option. I bet the rings are not seating right... even after 1,000 miles. It was never burning oil before... and I am sure that I put the rings in the right way. It drives fine but smokes, of course. It only kind of fouls out cylinder #2... (so my suspect cylinder) the others are running a little rich but no way near fouling out the plugs So, I am going to put new pistons and cylinders on the beast... Now my question is if I am already going this far why not split the case and put new crank, cam and rod bearings in it... I have done it tons of times on the old aircooled type 1... and there is no major difference here other than size and coolant... and time I know that the engine had overheated in the past and both heads were cracked, from overheating I presume... but there is no knock or any other symptoms of overheating... I wonder if it damaged the bearings when it overheated... Would you split the case and do the crank, cam bearings or just the pistons/cylinder, rod bearings. Any suggestions?
