Subject:   Custom Van Side Scoops

Aye Carumba, I'm doing what I promised I'd never do.. . After a long list absence I'm getting back on to find out if anyone is interested in some fiberglass side scoops I'll be making in the next few weeks. The male plugs for the fiberglass molds have just come back from the moldmaker and I should get the molds themselves by weeks end. I'm making the scoops to pull more air over the flat "mesa" style oilcooler that lives in the "channel" behind the passenger side rear wheel and ditto over the intercooler behind the driver's side rear wheel. I suppose the scoops would be of interest to anyone running similar cooling set-ups or anyone with an air-cooled van wanting more air in the engine compartment. If there's somewhere I could post a couple of pictures of the passenger side mold "plug" I'd be happy to so you can get an idea of what the finished, unpainted, fiberglass scoops will look like. I have no idea what to charge for these things, but suffice to say I have probably 100 hours of design and fabrication work in them up to this point. Actually making a couple of scoops will probably only take several hours, including about $20 worth of materials. Let me know if you're interested and what you think they're worth. Mark Thoma

p.s. has anyone ever transplanted an early vanagon sliding sunroof into a later model van? Huge, huge, undertaking or just a moderately huge undertaking? And did anybody ever make any way of opening the rear windows of getting some air flow through the rear of a vanagon?
