Mathew,

What about the sludge and metal fragments that build up! I've done this on a few engines in the past, but never on one that I cared about. Maybe just change the oil and see if the consumption goes down a bit. If its the valve guides it won't. You can always tell if its the guides or the rings anyway - the exhaust will show smoke when suddenly lifting off if its guides and under power/boost if its rings - as a general rule.
