Asking for trouble? No. but with ANY long distance trip, you should be prepared for certain factors.

I'm in the process of a cross country trip (San Diego, California, to Washington, D.C.) And this is on a vehicle I only just purchased. So the first things I did was check the belts, oil and water situations. Oil was/is due to be changed during the trip (like right now). Belts are old and cracked but servicable. Water is in fine shape.

So I picked up spare belts, a couple of extra oil filters and 12 quarts of 20w50 oil. Oh, yes, I also took along a few tools (metric crescent wrenches should I need to replace the belts).

I checked the tire pressure of all 5 tires and their condition. 4 tires on the vehicle are practically brand new. Spare is a bit worn, but servicable. Pressure is good all the way around.

Only bad thing is that the AC is out-of-order. :( Probably not much of an issue for you.
