Jon,

When I had to replace mine a year ago I found BD wanted less for a new one than the local FLAPS wanted for a rebuilt. BTW, I never nticed play in the steering. I replaced it because 2 different mechanics refused to give me an inspection sticker because of it.

Over the past week or so, the (manual) steering on my '81 has gone from dead-on tight to about three inches of play. Definitley makes for an interesting experience on a breezy day! I had my wife turn the wheel back and forth while I crawled underneath and inspected the front end; there was no movement of the tie rods etc in that three-inch area, so I'm guessing the problem lies within the rack & pinion? I would have expected it to go more gradually... Anyway, is there anybody who rebuilds these things, or am I stuck buying a new one? Anybody got a good used one they'll sell me? Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

JJ
