A basic puller does a great job--just make sure you're pulling against the inside ball hub, not the outside, or you will crack the ball cage when pulling. I made a u-shaped piece with a gate at one end, so I can slide this piece under the inner hub and pull against it (my gear puller's arms don't reach in that far). I can probably send a pic later today if that would help.

Alternatively, get a heavy brass drift punch, mount the axle in a vise with the CV at the bottom end, and start driving it off with a hammer and the punch. Make sure to work around the CV, i.e. don't hit only in one place. And be sure to hit on the inner hub only, same reason as above. The puller method is much easier though... bmc :) "Faith will move mountains, but you'd better bring a shovel...."
