Subject: Converting a GL to a Westy... need advice!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi all,

I have the opportunity to buy what appears to be a complete interior from a late model Westy... seat/bed, fridge, cabinets, sink, stove, etc... plus the poptop is available.

This is actually the car I have always wanted (apparently this one was in an accident), but I had to settle on an 87 Wolfsburg GL, as I could not find my dream Vanagon when I was shopping for Vanagons 7 years ago.

Anyway... my 87 has original motor with 130,000 miles and I just had compression tested... no cylinder is too far out of spec. Body has some rust spots, but I will give it a new paintjob form below the windows downwards this fall.

If I do get this complete camping interior and poptop, are there any major difficulties that I need to be aware of when doing the installation? I am fine with doing auto electrical work, can deal with wiring and relays etc... but what I am afraid of is that there may be size issues, of fit issues that I am overlooking when trying to fit the interior from a 1990 something Westy in my 87??

Is it difficult to cut the hole in the body for the vents etc?? How about cutting the top off to install the poptop??

Any info from those of you who have done these modifications will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

RSF
