the rust comes from behind. the best advice is to use a penetrating underbody spray, oil or paraffin based..just like the original stuff. something like "kroil" or the like. My grandfather used to tell me that when he'd change the oil on cars back when he was a mechanic in the 30's and 40's, he'd spray the used oil up all under the car inside the wheelwells, while it was on the lift in the garage.. it was effective keeping the rust at bay, the oily surfaces shed water and salt. modern EPA regs eliminated that practice tho....
