>>>Going east up to the eisenhower tunnel on I-70 my max speed >>>is about 30 MPH (second gear, foot to the floor, 2.1L, AT). ^^ Andrew:

That sounds about right. My '81 aircooled always drops into 2nd for the last 1/3 mile to the tunnel. My '87 Syncro Westy can make it in 3rd if lightly loaded; otherwise 2nd. Again, just for that last stretch from the US 6 exit to the tunnel.

I've driven 4 aircooleds in the mtns since 1964--'61, '67, '76 and now the '81. Always flat out to get up the passes. I used to joke about putting a brick on the pedal. Certainly the earlier ones had only two speeds: Off and Flatout. The '87 is the first VW bus that doesn't run at the limit all the time uphill.

Karma Komment: These 5 VWs total about 450,000 miles going as far east as NYC, as far west as Astoria, OR, as far south as Baja California Sur and as far north as Sudbury, Ontario. I have always made it home. That is, I've had troubles, but always made it home under power; I've never been towed on the road. Thanks, VW.

I think I'll always pass you because you have AT!
