Subject: intake manifold gasket
Content-Type: text/plain

When I replaced the cylinder head gaskets on my 1983.5 water-cooled Westy, I bought a gasket kit that contained gaskets for the intake manifolds as well as the cylinder head. Pictures of the intake manifold gaskets are here

http://communitybuilders.dhs.org/craigoda/vw/intakemanifold/index.html

There are two different gaskets that fit over the intake ports of my cylinder head. One is thin cardboard. The other one is about 3mm thick and made a black hard substance that looks like plastic. There is brown paper on each side. I think that the thick black one is the proper gasket to use. If this is correct, what is the thin cardboard gasket for? It fits perfectly, but I think it is too thin. Unfortunately, when I first assembled the intake manifold, I only used the thin cardboard gasket.

Right now, I'm having some problems with cold-idle and I've checked for vacuum leaks. I've ordered new fuel-injector seals, but these will take a few days to arrive. In the meantime, I'm planning on take off the intake manifold again and putting the thicker gasket in place. Should I put both gaskets on? is there any chance that this might solve my problem?

Thanks, Craig.
