I drive my vanagon everyday and for 8 years at that. Sure a few problems have cropped up ever since I ditched the wasserleaker for the Subie engine I have had no problems to speak of for a year and a half. (knock on wood). These cars are very well built, the drivetrains are another story of course. Once ANY car gets up in mileage, you'll have problems. Keeping current with those problems and performing preventative maintainance is the first rule to happy ownership!
