Subject: Some Info & a Question

For those of you who may be interested, Gnarlodious (aka Rachel) made it to KC on her way from Santa Fe to NYC. She pulled in my driveway on the afternoon of the 11th and left early yesterday morning. Her 83 diesel Vanagon was humming right along.

The big news from KC is that Wolfy got back on the road today. I took him on a tour of the neighborhood, and he did not disappoint (much). Hardly any valve noise, engine ran smooth as long as my foot was on the accelerator. When I downshifted and dropped off the gas, I experienced some bucking due to the "idle hunting" syndrome I'm experiencing.

Film at 11.

Now the question: I'm attempting to bleed my cooling system. I opened the bleeder on the radiator, and I know there's supposed to be a bleed valve on the big hoses mounted to the front top of the engine compartment on my 85 1.9 L. There is a fitting with a knurled knob near the left side of these big hoses, but I cannot figure out how to operate it. I've turned it in and turned it out, but all it wants to do is rotate without doing anything. What am I doing wrong here?

Thanks in advance.

Dave in KC 85 Westy
