My '87 GL has rotary motors...

I watched them spin as I overhauled them, after connecting power to the motors alone. They have a shaft, a worm gear, and spin two plastic gears to operate the locking mechanism.

Perhaps the Eurovan has a different unit for pushing the locks up and down... but I can only speak for Vanagons.
