Hi Jeff

I am attempting to add dual air to my 82 TDI project. I have had the front fan/air box apart, don't recall exactly how much space there was in there. I think one of the main problems with the idea you have is most of the air coming into the box is from outside. I don't know how easy it would be to get the box to recirculate air. I also don't know where you would find an evaporator that is long and skinny like the heater core. Otherwise, not all your air would be forced through the evaporator. I think you would need to switch to a variable displacement type compressor. If yours gets switched on and off by the expansion valve, it would get confused by two signals--I think. Also, (second main problem with this idea)--because the evaporator changes the liquid "freon" to a gas, and the pressure changes also during this process, you can't hook up in series.

I took an evaporator from a 1986 or 1987, I don't recall. Anyway, the important thing is that the hose fittings stick straight out from the evaporator, so it won't take up lots of space, and won't bang me or my wife in the head. I am mounting it right in front of the hole for the pop top, but right behind the front seats. I am trying to use a bank of 4 muffin fans instead of the small squirrel cage fans to save space. They might not blow enough air--I haven't played around with them much yet. They came from a surplus place in Nebraska, and they claim to move 100 cfm per fan, so I should total 400 cfm. And, since these fans came from some sort of a computer cooling assembly, they may not hold up to automotive use. Anyway, then I was also going to add a small Westy type evaporator in the rear overhead cabinet, only I was going to make it much small than the Westy evaporator. Not sure where to source the evaporator yet. Each one will need its own pressure regulator valve.

That how I understand it from talking to the guy who is going to help me hook it all up. He seems to think it won't be a problem.

Wise list, Anyone out there who has removed/revamped their front heater blower motor housing please advise me on this one: Any reason why I can't locate a small Air Conditioning evaporator to the inside of the heater blower motor housing hooking it up in parallel or in series? Is there enough room in that blower housing for such a thing? Trying to get more cool up front. Just wondering since I'm going into the blower box this fall.
