I just replaced the radiator in my 83.5 and was in the same quandry. I tried different methods including of course Bently's procedures. But what worked the best, easiest was a flush/fill tee in the heater hose above the spare. The only IMPORTANT thing to be concious of is filling with the hose on trickle. Do a search on the list for "flushing" or "filling" cooling system. Do it this way and never have to curse your vanagon again in regards to this. If you want a detailed lowdown on the technique and a pic of my "fillamatic 2000" Email me directly........ Good Luck
