A slight improvement over the finishing washer normally found at Home Depot
is one that Mad River Canoes uses to support their 3/16" stainless machine
screws that hold the thwarts and cane seat hardware trusses.  In addition
to being a little higher quality, they have a small flat edge to spread the
screw load out without cutting into the fabric(or in the case of the
gunwales on the canoe, the ash rails).  Not sure if the modified finsih
washers are called"load-bearing finishing washers" or whatever, but the
wide flange stainless finishing washers that Old Town uses on their
vinyl-gunwaled canoes, would be way overkill and look like the door panels
going in a Hummer or something.  Might want to contact Mad River to find
their supplier for these finishing washers.  I haven't seen them anywhere
