Subject: Speedo Problem Question

Here's a weird one, anyone have a similar experience? I spent last week at 6300 feet on the east slope of the Cascades (Table Mountain) with about 1200+ other amateur astronomers. Sunday, coming down, almost at the bottom, I noticed that my speedometer was sitting on zero. This was near the end of about a 4,000 foot drop over 12 miles on a winding, narrow road, all in 2nd gear (automatic) all the way down, but still a lot of braking. The brakes never faded, but I know they were hot. What was strange, once I got down in the flat, and before the brakes really had any time to cool, the speedo twitched a couple of time, then started to work just fine, no problems since. The question I'm left with is this: Do I have a failure pending in the speedometer or the associated cables or the box they go thru? or is this just a consequence of hot brakes, something expanding and then cooling down?
