Subject: Overheating '87 GL
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Over the weekend my '87 Vanagon GL started to overheat while I was driving. The temperature on the gauge went up then the red light started flashing. I shut the engine down immediately.

Once I got the van home and allowed it to cool I took a closer look. The radiator fan had good continuity and seemed to operate properly. As I ran the engine for testing the radiator never got warm and the coolant lines to and from the radiator never got warm. There were no coolant leaks from the pump or elsewhere. The pump doesn't seem to be making noise. To me, everything pointed at the thermostat. Well, I just replaced the thermostat and bled the system. I tested the van, and found that once again the temp gauge went up and the red light would begin to flash. The radiator was cool and the coolant lines to and from the radiator were cool. The heater seemed to be working. I didn't find any coolant leaks. The overflow tank is at the proper level.

I am stumped. Any ideas? I hope I'm not overlooking something simple.

Bruce
