Subject: Speakers in a Westy Headliner?
Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hi Folks,

I just got back from a morning of searching the local U-Pull it auto salvage yards for parts.

While I was pawing through the misc 1980 vans, the one 1982 Diesel Westy conversion, and the 1985 Wolfy with front AC, I started to look closely at the cloth headliner. Many of them were torn and I could easily see how much room there was up there.

I got to thinking, could I put speakers in my headliner just above or just behind me?

Now, I have a 1986 Westy, which has the harder headliner up front (wood?), it's not cloth. It seems rigid enough to have speakers there.

I'd like larger speakers than the tinny 4"ers I have in my door. I nice set out 6" round, or even 6 x 9 ovals seem like they might work well there.

Has anyone ever attempted to put speakers in the ceiling headliner? Any idea what the sound would be like? Better or worse than at my feet in the door?

If it's been done by anyone, I'd love to know more (fotos would be great).

Please, email me your ideas, thoughts or suggestions. I need better sound!

Thanks much,

db

p.s. there is a nice brown 1980 Air cooled vanagon at the eastern u-pull-it in Sunnyside, Oregon. Keys were on the brown vinyl seat when we arrived. Tired and engine were gone, the rest was complete. Very good shape. Full black metal bumpers, with very nice tow bar and ball head. Front had the full bench seat (room for 3 up front) and the entire van had a nice home made curtain set with Aztec pattern. Might be worth checking out. I scored two interior door handles for a buck each. Lots of fine parts left, including all door handles and gas cap, with original key. -- dave bowers Portland, Oregon 1986 Westy "G2"
