To all the experts out there:

Does over-torquing lug nuts lead to premature rotor warp? I have seen this debate rage among brake experts. One the one side, some say that only excessive heat, i.e., braking hard for quick stops over time leads to rotor warp. Others say it is the air-gun jockey with no torque sticks that lead to it. I think it is a combination of both.

Strangely enough, I always hand-torque my lugs and have yet to warp a rotor on any car I have owned. I have owned many and driven some of them hard with short/quick stops. My wife, on the other hand, before we got married, was always having warped rotors. I suspect it was due to air-gun jockeys as I had not serviced her car.

Any thoughts? Jim W.

One of the many reasons that I have purchased tires from Discount Tire (or America's Tires) is that they ALWAYS finish the lug nuts by hand with a torque wrench. When I first saw that I realized that they might know what they are doing and might even care about their customers. I have never been disappointed during the last 15+ years of dealing with them exclusively.
