Bill,

I have seen a turbocharged inline-4 in a 914 back in the early 80's. However, it was a 2 liter Ford from a Pinto. There's an outfit called Esslinger Engineering in Southern California who made a mission of installing Pinto motors in various vehicles which utilized the VW transaxles. They even campaigned a sand dragster called Pinto Beans.

I spoke to the fellow with the 914 at one of the early Bug-O-Rama's. He also had a Type 2 Single Cab pick-up powered with the Pinto engine as well. He said both used Esslinger Engineering adapters.

As for the Subaru engines, there is at least one listee in Southern California who is seeking an 911 w/ a broken engine to do this transplant.

It you decide to put a 911 engine instead, I have a couple of spares to sell you. 2.2 liters & 2.4 liters.

So there....
