The first place I would look would be the CV joints. Bad CV joints will knock under various conditions such as turning either right or left, accelerating or decelerating. It is also characteristically an intermittent problem. If your van has the customary 200,000 miles on it start at the CV's. John McLean 87 Vanagon GL
