Try a new battery.
I replaced the starter in my 1987, and the problem pretty much disappeared,
and now I have a new Bosch battery too, and it starts everytime, without any
delay or dead time. (before it was crazy... At any given start there would
be a 50% chance that the key would be turned and nothing at all would
happen... no click, nothing).
