Hi Kath:

Yes, It Can Be Done.

I recently bought a drain pan on Ebay, as my van only has the heat shield on the inside of the stovetop lid.

No Vanagons sold in Canada ever had the drain pan from the factory, because of Gov't safety concerns.

The left side of the drain pan fits in the left side of the factory hinge. Your Van has this hinge.

The right side of the drain pan requires the hinge that the drain pan was originally mounted with. You need to make sure that you get this hinge along with the drain pan from your supplier.

Failing that - both hinges are the same - so see if you can get a left one from somewhere.

When you place the pan to mount it, the location of the right-hand side hinge is obvious - a verbal discussion of it's placement is much less clear.

Good luck.

My westy is a 1987. Last winter we rented a westy in Hawaii < donąt know what year it was < but it had a neat design twist on the stove top which Iąd love to have on mine. Inside the stove/sink lid is an inner stainless steel panel, which is designed to be lowered over the stove top and used as a dish rack when washing dishes. I assume this was a design innovation in some year after 1987.

Has anyone out there tried to modify an old westy stovetop to include this feature? If so, how did you do it? If this isnąt possible, is it perhaps possible to upgrade to the new stovetop through Bus Depot or elsewhere? -- Katherine Maas, MA, CPCC KJ Maas Associates Ltd.
