Subject: '91 Westy simple trip report
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Just got back from a Sun Valley/Ketchum, ID trip (from Salt Lake). About 700 miles total and 19.5 mpg. Event: I was out at the end of a dirt Sawtooth Natinal Forest road called Deer Creek and had just moved to a different, more remote campsite, and noticed coolant signs on the ground behind my van. The hose coming out the back/right-head side of the engine was so brittle it had cracked in about 3 places. Each time I tried to do something with it, it would crack further. Finally swapped the pressure-tank-to-overflow-tank hose, leaving no overflow. It got me back to town next day and easily got more hose and clamps to reinstate servicability to the expansion tank. I'm posting this because I was able to reduce the loss of coolant by plugging hoses and fittings to create vacuum and stop the flow of coolant out of the system. Forest twigs and sticks work! I used a coffee pot to put water back in the system and had a loss of about 5/6 cups. Started up the engine and let it heat up, racing it periodically, and making no effort at bleeding. The system is working perfectly. Saw a few Eurovans and several Westy's heading north into Idaho on my way home...all waving madly. Wishing y'all an enjoyable weekend.

Bob Stevens ...by the way...some Idaho pics at link below, then "Ketchum"
