This explains why the (disconnected) heater hoses on my old '75 VW would pick up smelly air from under the engine and blow it through the heater vents. OTOH, on my Honda, the dash vents will blow air into the car with the fan off, when I'm on the highway. I think it's a ram-air effect, since the intakes are on the cowl.
